The Reuben is a classic New York Deli sandwich made with rye bread, pastrami, sauerkraut Swiss cheese and pickles.

Famously dressed withRussian Sauce’ which consists of mayonnaise, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, gherkin relish and tabasco. A very pleasing flavour combination.

The Flaevor Twist

Just to try something a little different and add a spicy kick, this Spicy Reuben Sandwich introduces an Asian influence using Korean gochujang chilli paste combine with pickles and mayonnaise for a tongue-tingling alternative.

The bread

For one last upgrade, sourdough bread replaces the traditional rye introducing a pleasant crunch and chew. However, rye bread or crusty white loaf can be substituted is sourdough is unavailable.

Spicy Reuben Sandwich

Ingredients

  • 200g Pastrami
  • 2 slices sourdough bread
  • butter
  • 125g or 1/2 cup sauerkraut
  • 1 garlic clove, crushed
  • 2 slices Swiss Cheese
  • 1 small pickled cucumber / Gherkin
  • 2 Tbsp Korean Chilli Pickle Mayo

Instructions

  1. Heat a sandwich press or a frying pan on the stovetop. Mix together sauce ingredients.
  2. Butter both pieces of bread. Turn bread over and on the non-buttered side spread each piece with Korean Chilli Pickled Mayo.
  3. Now start layering: First lay down one slice of cheese, followed by the Pastrami, then sauerkraut, pickles and top with the other slice of cheese.
  4. Place the second slice of bread on top, buttered side facing up and grill in frying pan or sandwich press until golden brown.
