The Classic Aussie Burger: A True Taste of Australia with Fried Egg and Beetroot
If you’ve ever visited an Australian chippie, you’ve probably come across this iconic burger recipe where a fried egg, sliced beetroot and fried white onions are a must-have combination to complement a big, juicy beef patty. The beetroot adds an addictive earthy flavour, and in true Australian style, the white onions are best fried on a barbecue with beer poured over them.
Beef and Beetroot: A Harmonious Flavour Combination
Beef and beetroot complement each other in both flavour and texture. Beetroot has a natural, earthy sweetness that contrasts beautifully with the deep, umami-rich flavour of beef. Beef burger patties are fatty and full-bodied, which allows the cooling, earthy quality of the beetroot to cut through nicely.

- 150g beef mince
- Pinch of ground cumin
- 1/2 white onion sliced thinly
- 1 large pickeled cucumber cut into slices lengthways

- Tomato slices
- Lettuce
- 2 tbsp tomato ketchup
- 1 tbsp mustard
- Sea salt flakes and pepper
Instructions

- Season the beef mince with salt, pepper and cumin and form into a patty a little larger than your burger bun.
- Heat a frying pan with oil. Add the beef patty into the pan and place the sliced onions on top of the patty. Season the onions with salt. Cook until the bottom is browned and crisp. Flip patty over, so that the onions are now underneath.

- Remove patty from frying pan. Keeping the fat in the pan and place brioche buns into the pan, cut side down and toast until lightly browned. Remove.
- Add a little more oil to the pan if needed and when hot crack in an egg and fry until crispy around the edges. Season with salt.
- Build your burger: Divide the ketchup-mustard sauce between the buns, then starting with the bottom bun, layer with letuce tomatoes (sprinkle the tomatoes with salt), followed by the cheesy beef patty, beetroot, fried egg and finish with brioche bun top.
