Relaxing Cardamom Milk

A beautiful drink to calm the senses

A warm comforting drink that smells as good as it tastes

Whether in a moment of relaxation, sharing the afternoon with a friend, or in need of a nightcap before bed, this Relaxing Cardamom Milk is a soothing option with floral tones of cardamon, cloves, ginger, and cinnamon.

A touch of black pepper brings a balanced kick to the sweet, and if it isn’t wrong to suggest, later into the evening a splash of whisky would also work nicely when you need that kick just a touch stronger.

What is the best milk to use for Relaxing Cardamom Milk?

For dairy lovers, full-fast fat cow’s milk is recommended for best results. This will produce a thick creamy texture which is best for carrying flavour and aiding spice infusion.

The best vegan option is oat milk. Oat milk has a thick creamy texture also great for infusing spices. As Otameal has a high sugar content and is quite sweet, try adding half the maple syrup and test for balance. Soy milk would also work well.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 250ml full fat cows milk or oat milk
  • 1 tsp maple syrup
  • 3 green cardamom pods
  • 1/4 tsp cinnamon
  • 2 cloves
  • 3 black peppercorns
  • ½ tsp grated ginger (or dried ginger)

Instructions

  1. Place the cardamom pods, cloves and peppercorns into a pestle & mortar and bash a few times until they break apart (do not turn into a powder, keep as large chunks). This will help release oils and flavour.
  2. Pour milk into a small saucepan and add bashed cardamom, cloves, and peppercorns along with ginger and cinnamon. Slowly bring to a simmer and allow the milk to gently cook for 5 minutes or until hot (do not bring it to a boil). Remove from the heat, place a lid on top, and let it sit and stew for a further 5 minutes.
  3. Strain milk and stir through maple syrup. Transfer to a mug and sprinkle with a little extra cinnamon and some dried rose petals if you wish.
